Tanzania is the best destination on earth for wildlife safaris.
We are not just boasting - Tanzania has repeatedly won tourism awards from reputable sources such as TripAdvisor.com and Safaribookings.com. The 2019 World Travel Awards named Serengeti National Park the top tourism destination in the world. And if you need more evidence: Tanzania was named the Best Tourist Destination in the World in Russia in 2019, and the Best Exotic Destination by National Geographic Russia in 2018.
Tanzania continues to win tourism and travel awards because of its rich wildlife, natural beauty, diverse landscapes and attention to great hospitality.
In Tanzania, you can summit a mountain and the next day dive in the Indian Ocean. Or, walk the footsteps of history in Ngorongoro Crater and can camp within the Serengeti. Even among its East African neighbors, there is no place like Tanzania. But don’t take our word for it, or even the proof of Tanzania’s esteemed awards: come and see for yourself!
With so many choices - all of which are amazing - how can one choose to spend a few weeks in Tanzania? The purpose of this guide is to help you determine which attractions best fit your specific interests, which parks to visit, and what to pack for your adventure in Tanzania. Remember: if the time is too short, you can always come back again!
Tanzania map
Tanzania is vast and incredibly diverse: this country has a total of 16 national parks, 32 game reserves, three conservation areas, and two marine parks. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest reserve in all of Africa and Serengeti National Park covers an area larger than the entire country of Belgium!
Due to the vast size of the country, it is recommended to choose safari circuits in Tanzania in one of the general areas: Southern, Western, or Northern. The Northern Circuit is by far the most popular because of the density of animals, quality hotels and close proximity between parks. Less travel time between parks allows visitors to experience more of Tanzania in a short amount of time.
Southern Safari Circuit
The Southern destinations cover a huge area across Tanzania and although there are many parks to visit, the travel time between each can be lengthy. Some notable parks in the Southern area are the giant Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National park known for its wild dogs and large elephant population, and Saadani National Park located along the coast where you may spot lion tracks on the sand.
Western Safari Circuit
Tanzania’s Western attractions include Lake Tanganyika, Mahale National Park, and Gombe National Park where Jane Goodall completed much of her research on chimpanzees. In the Western area is also Katavi National Park, known as a “true wilderness” adventure.
Northern Safari Circuit - the most interesting parks
The Northern Circuit remains popular because it hosts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The close proximity of Serengeti, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire National Parks allow quick transfers between these three popular destinations, meaning more time enjoying game viewing and less time on the highway. There is also the option of flying to avoid roads all together: small, local airports and bush planes allow for exciting air travel as part of your safari itinerary. We recommend a 7-day safari to fully enjoy the Northern Circuit, and suggest no less than 4 days/3 nights on our most popular package: Lake Manyara > Tarangire > Ngorongoro > Serengeti.
Other wildlife attractions
After these most popular parks, the Northern Circuit also has remote Lake Natron and the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, Arusha National Park and Mount Meru, and of course - Mount Kilimanjaro and Kilimanjaro National park. Kilimanjaro International Airport is easy to fly into and allows ease of access to the Northern route. Aso, the city of Arusha is a tourism hub with many comfortable hotels to make transiting through this city a pleasant experience, not merely a stop-over.
We recommend the Northern Circuit because it provides a diverse adventure: dream safaris in picturesque locations, world-renown attractions and exciting activities, such as summiting mountains or flying in a bush plane.

View All Safari ToursLuxury Safari Tours
A spectacular safari goes beyond wildlife and great game drives - on a luxury Tanzania safari every aspect of your travel offers that ‘extra’ to make it the trip of a lifetime. Think: chef-inspired dinners, a hot breakfast served on your private veranda, swimming pools in the middle of the Serengeti, and options of relaxing massages at your accommodations.
Whether you are looking for a dream honeymoon or a vacation of a lifetime, our luxury safari tours in Tanzania will be remembered forever. Your safari experience should include accommodations and dining that go beyond the comfortable and into the exquisite. Altezza partners with top hotels and lodges that have consistently won travel awards and have been recognized as the best in Tanzania.
Rest assured, your luxury holiday will be incredible.
Budget Camping Safaris
Altezza Travel does not offer budget camping safaris at this time. While there definitely are some great campsites and good low-cost operators, we have had enough negative experiences in the past that we will not take a risk with our valued clients.
Sometimes, ‘Budget’ means quality for a lower price, however, all too often, companies attempt to save money by reducing quality. The risks of a budget safari could be vehicles that are not up to standard, poor tents and sites that lack basic amenities. Your trip to Tanzania should be the experience of a lifetime, not ruined by soaked bags in a leaking tent or wasted time on the side of the road because of a poorly maintained safari vehicle.
Also, budget safaris often have unexpected costs and may not end with the savings clients expect.
For example: a camp cook is standard on budget safaris but comes with an additional salary, this adds up on the total bill of the client. Other inconveniences include carrying tents and expeditions supplies atop the safari jeep - this means guests cannot open the convertible roof and enjoy viewing wildlife easily.
Hygiene standards at camps have no regulations or controls, and some lack running water. This means that your health may be put at risk or your meals contaminated. It would be a shame for your trip to be ruined by the onset of illness or stomach issues due to poor hygiene.
Instead, we recommend staying at a lodge or a luxury tented camp, which provides the wilderness setting, as well as great facilities and amenities.
All the pleasure of waking up amidst acacia trees and famous African sunrises will still be realized, but you will also eat professionally prepared meals, served with a great view as you sit on a comfortable chair at the end of the day.
We acknowledge that some camping safaris are good and many travelers have great experiences, therefore, we recommend our customers look at both luxury and mid-range options for their travels. Consider including verified and quality tented camps to your itinerary for a great experience at locations we know and trust. You can also combine luxury options and midrange accommodations for your very own, unique experience.

Lodge (Midrange) safaris
Midrange safaris remain the most popular option of travelers to Tanzania - Why? Because they offer comfort and great hospitality at convenient locations near the national parks. In wilderness settings, these lodges blend with the natural surroundings and allow you to experience the beautiful wild of Tanzania.
They differ from luxury safaris in price and some of the above-and-beyond extras. Mid-range lodges and tented camps offer comfortable essentials and provide the basics with perfection.
All safari lodges in Tanzania featured in our safari programs have been personally visited by our team and selected because they provide outstanding hospitality within mid-range accommodations.
Most safari travelers envision organic African scenes, the beauty of untouched nature. And to be honest, often typical safari chairs, khaki costumes, and picnic lunches in the bush are part of that daydream, too! This is a ‘traditional safari’, with touches reminiscent of early 20th century expeditions - but with modern amenities such as wireless internet and much better food. A mid-range safari in Tanzania highlights the wilderness and wildlife of this magical country and is sure to please all types of travelers.

Day trips
Want just a bit more time in the parks? Too busy for a multi-day safari? Day trips are the perfect add-on! Altezza Travel offers fantastic one day safaris in Tanzania - to Tarangire National Park or Arusha National Park. Both locations are near Arusha and allow for plenty of time to enjoy the wildlife, without spending a significant time in transit.
Tarangire and Arusha National parks each have unique attractions: Tarangire for the largest elephant population in Northern Tanzania, and Arusha National Park with the option of a walking safari to get even closer to Tanzania’s wildlife. If you only have a day or two after a Kilimanjaro climb, consider a day-trip safari to enhance your Tanzanian experience.
We do not offer day trips to Ngorongoro or Serengeti, as they are too far to travel to and return in one day. Each of these parks can be visited in a multi-day safari - and believe us, it will definitely be worth it!
Tanzania National Parks and Game Reserves
Tanzania is the largest country in East African and has diverse attractions in every corner and mountain of the country. From the sandy beaches along the coast to the top of Kilimanjaro, there is something sure to pique your interest.
Below we highlight some of the most popular attractions in the Northern Circuit, but this is not an exhaustive list of all there is to experience in Tanzania. The second-largest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika, is in Western Tanzania and the chance to swim with gentle whale-sharks is off Mafia Island in the South. The “Spice Island'' of Zanzibar blends Swahili culture and ancient Arab charm for a truly unique experience in the Indian Ocean.
If you have only a short time we recommend prioritizing the Northern parks, as they allow you to get a ‘taste’ of the African bush. Their convenient locations to airports and major highways mean less travel time in between and more time enjoying your holiday. The density of animals offers a good chance to catch all of the African Big Five, as well as many more elusive species.
Arusha National Park is an often-overlooked destination conveniently located just outside the city of Arusha. Its location and ease of access make it an ideal day-trip safari. Visitors may immediately note the peacefulness of this park as herds of zebras and gazelles graze at ease. This is due to the absence of major predators in Arusha National Park, namely lions. An advantage is the option of a walking safari: guests can leave the jeep behind and walk in the grasslands near zebras, wander the woodlands beside giraffes and take the first steps on the base of Mount Meru.
Guests may also take a canoe or boat ride on the small lakes within the park.
Although this is one of the smaller national parks, it has rich experiences and unique attractions. Arusha National Park provides a taste of greater Tanzania with its own “Little Serengeti”, Ngurdoto Crater - a mini Ngorongoro- and Momella Lakes full of flamingos, reminiscent of Lake Manyara.Tarangire National Park is an ideal location to visit during the dry season. The continual supply of water from the Tarangire River ensures that animals will be present year-round. Just as zebra and waterbuck come in search of water, their predators soon follow.
Tarangire is also home to the largest elephant population in Northern Tanzania.
It is not just that you will spot one or two elephants, but you will see entire families, complete with adorable young for a precious experience all visitors will cherish.Photographers especially enjoy this park because of panoramic African scenes and monumental baobabs that speak of the might of nature.
Most of our safari itineraries start with Tarangire National Park and then continue on to either Ngorongoro or Serengeti National Park due to convenience of location. However, you are also welcome to choose a day-trip to Tarangire National Park if you are short on time.Serengeti National Park is the top safari destination in the world, according to the 2019 World Travel Awards - and with good reason! Serengeti National Park is an enormous park with diverse animals and the home of the Great Migration between Kenya and Tanzania. A few weeks each year, millions of wildebeests and zebras cross into the Serengeti, followed by hungry predators.
It is here that visitors witness animals repeating the historical journey of their ancestors. Wildebeests plunge into the Grumeti River, or herds charge across the Mara River on their expedition to fresh grazing and raising up their young.
Even the most novice of photographers can capture incredible footage of wildebeest herds stirring up clouds of dust, zebras with dizzying crowds of stripes, and their predators lurking in the shadows.
Nature repeating itself has never been so thrilling!
Even during the off-seasons, Serengeti National Park is an incredible adventure. Due to its size, we recommend at least three days to see everything. It is common to see major predators, such as leopards and cheetahs, and there is a good chance at observing all of the African Big Five animals within this park.
Either because time is unhurried in the Serengeti or the safari adventure reaches a climax, many of our clients report that their time in Serengeti National Park was the favorite of all. This must-see park is recommended on all our multi-day safari packages. We highly recommend visiting Ngorongoro Conservation area on any multi-day safari in Tanzania. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ngorongoro Crater is often called the ‘Pearl of a Tanzanian Safari’ and will greatly enrich any Northern circuit trip.
Why?
Because Ngorongoro Crater has the highest density of wild animals anywhere in Africa. Because the crater is a natural phenomenon; the largest volcanic caldera in the world - believed to be created by the eruption of a volcano that would have rivaled Mount Kilimanjaro in size. Because it offers the chance to see the Big Five, including the endangered black rhino. Because visitors can touch history at Olduvai Gorge. Because Maasai herders in traditional dress fearlessly walk goats where lions tread.
It is an ideal location for animal enthusiasts, history buffs, photographers and nature lovers.
There is something for everyone in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Most of our safari packages schedule a day in Ngorongoro Crater before continuing on to the Serengeti because of the convenient road connecting the two.A safari in Lake Manyara National Park is a different experience in Tanzania than many of the traditional safaris parks. Lake-based, visitors see a huge number of birds and animals that depend on the water; such as the hippopotamus and flamingos. Indeed, Lake Manyara is the home to the largest flock of greater flamingos in all of Africa.
This park is a green paradise, offering the shelter of trees to hundreds of unique bird species, making it an ideal destination for ornithophiles.
Many acacia trees also attract the tallest mammal on earth: the gentle giraffe. Finally, this is the only location where one can see tree-climbing lions.
A visit to Lake Manyara National Park usually continues on to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti for a multi-day safari package. One of the most intriguing places in Tanzania, Lake Natron, is not far from Ngorongoro and Serengeti. It is made special by the proximity of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, which towers over the area. Those in good physical shape can attempt climbing it, but be ready for a challenge - the ascent is tough and demands a lot of dedication and stamina. However, if you take the risk, you will be rewarded with a magnificent African sunrise atop the active volcano!
The lake area itself offers a lot of activities. Here you can take a walk to Engare Sero waterfalls, make a visit to Ng’iro River or explore authentic local lifestyles in the neighbouring Maasai Bomas.
The main attraction, however, is Lake Natron, whose salty waters covered its shores with a pink-white crust.
From August till October the lake becomes a nesting place for thousands of pink flamingos, making it a special destination for wildlife photographers.Ruaha National Park is a great place for everyone interested in epic hunting scenes. The high presence of feline predators earned a reputation for Ruaha as a place where the chances of spotting a lion, a leopard or a cheetah chasing their prey are among the highest of all parks. It is located in Central Tanzania, and if your schedule is tight, the best way to reach it is by air. Otherwise, it is often included in more extended safari packages.
These feline hunters are attracted to Ruaha by a large number of antelopes, with the largest population attributed to the Kudu. The researchers speculate that their concentration in Ruaha is the highest of all places in Africa.
The park is also densely inhabited by elephants (over 10,000), so everyone interested in these giants will find it interesting. Finally, with over 400 different species present here, Ruaha is a good place for African birdwatching.Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Tanzania. The number of wild animals here is also astonishing - over 300,000 wildebeests and buffalos, about 30,000 elephants and many, many others. Apart from the large herds of mammals, Selous Game Reserve has sizeable populations of hippos and crocodiles. These animals live in multiple swamps scattered around the Rufiji river, the deepest and largest in Tanzania.
This park is hard to access by road from Arusha, a popular safari hub. Taking a flight with one of our partnered bush air carriers is much recommended - it is safe, convenient and fast.
The experiences there, however, are very rewarding - vast plains, mesmerizing sunrises and, most importantly, a small number of other tourists.
Besides, safari-goers interested in bird watching will not be disappointed - Selous is home to an impressive flock.
Popular Safari Routes in Tanzania
Safari itineraries focus on location within Tanzania. Schedules of parks to be visited are separated for ease of travel and consideration of time for travelers. They are categorized by Northern Circuit, Southern Zone and Western Area. By-far, the Northern Circuit is the most popular and will get the bulk of attention in this guide.
Home to Mount Meru but absent of major predators, this is one park that allows for walking safaris. Visitors can walk on the grasslands and step on the base of the second-highest mountain in Tanzania. Arusha National Park offers a sampling of major Tanzanian attractions with its own “Little Serengeti” and Ngurdoto Crater.
The only park in which to view tree-climbing lions and one the best places for bird-watching. Lake Manyara is a green oasis even in the dry season and is a regular safe-haven for giraffes. This national park has a huge population of flamingos, making the lake look pink from afar.
Famous for the Ngorongoro Crater, this UNESCO Heritage Site offers a rich experience for photographers, nature-enthusiasts and history-buffs. The caldera has been humorously described as a giant, natural bowl full of animals. After the eruption of an enormous volcano, the caldera was formed and created a unique environment that now hosts the largest density of animals of the world. You are sure to see lions, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles and with a bit of luck, elephants and the endangered black rhino.
A must for any northern-circuit experience, the Serengeti offers visitors wild Africa at its finest. Early mornings and picturesque sunsets allow travelers to capture footage of cheetahs and leopards, observe elands and impalas in nature. There is a good chance of seeing the Big Five of Africa; elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion in Serengeti National Park. This is also the prime location for witnessing the incredible and world-renown wildebeest migration.
Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in all of Africa. Its size means the chance to see a great number of animals, including the nearly extinct black rhino in its natural habitat. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it does not attract large numbers of visitors like Ngorongoro, therefore, a visit here will be more quiet and serene. There are few hotels in the area, but wonderful luxury tented camps for guests to enjoy an overnight or multi-day safari.
Getting to Mahale Mountains National Park is an adventure in itself! This park is only accessible by bush plane or boat; you cannot enter by road. Chimpanzees are the main attraction of this park, with the special option of “chimp trekking” to observe them in the wild. There are also several water activities not available in other parks, such as snorkeling and kayaking on Lake Tanganyika. Guests also have the chance to climb the Mahale Mountains during their visit.
Ruaha National Park is a unique park within Tanzania, home to the largest number of predators. It is estimated that 10% of all lions not only in Tanzania but all of Africa, reside in Ruaha. There are also massive numbers of buffalo and elephants in this park. One of the least-visited destinations in Africa, guests may feel they have the place to themselves! Those after a quiet, but wild adventure should consider Ruaha National Park.
Gombe National Park is the famous former home of Jane Goodall as she researched the behavior of chimpanzees. To this day, visitors can experience her passion for respecting the environment and honoring wildlife, especially the intelligent chimpanzees within Gombe Stream National Park. This park has no roads and cannot be entered by vehicle; all guests must enter by boat, via nearby Kigoma.
For the traveler who wants to get off the beaten path, Katavi National Park offers a true wilderness safari. This massive park is the third-largest in Tanzania and is estimated to have as many animals as Ngorongoro. This park is very remote and is one of the least visited in all of Tanzania, but for this reason is it also significantly more expensive.
Tanzania Weather
While day-to-day weather anywhere is unpredictable, Tanzania’s seasons are well documented. Tourism has typically followed the dry seasons, making high season during the warm and dry spells and low season during the heavy rains.
January and February tend to be dry and very warm, with rains beginning around early April and continuing through June. July is often considered ‘winter’ as it is subjectively cold (many Europeans and North Americans comment that they find it pleasant, while Tanzanians don winter coats!).
September through November presents warmer, dry weather and there is often a short rainy season during December, with a mix of rain and sun.
No matter the time of year you visit it is advisable to come prepared with several layers: a light jacket and sweater, as well as sturdy walking sandals and closed shoes with a few pairs of socks. Several areas of Northern Tanzania, including Ngorongoro Highlands, are at higher elevations and mean cooler nights and chilly early mornings.

Best time to visit Tanzania
When is the best time to visit Tanzania? Ultimately, that is for you to decide. The two most popular times for safaris are from July to September and December through early March. The animals are plentiful and sometimes migrating during this time. The weather is usually beautiful - a bit cooler in July and August, and very warm in December to January - guests can anticipate sunny days and pleasant evenings. However, some tourists find the national parks crowded during this time and many other guests in lodges.
March through June and October to December have their appeal, as well; the wet season means a more private experience and everything is lush and green. The animals are usually active and found grazing on the long grass. The downfall to this time of year, however, is that some areas of parks are inaccessible because of heavy rains or deep mud.
Tanzania is a very peaceful and safe country within Africa, with lower crime rates than even some European countries. However, reasonable travel precautions should be considered; such as keeping your passport in a safe place, not wearing flashy jewelry and taking a taxi instead of public transportation.
If needed, there is a special police force for tourists who speak English and will take any concerns seriously. Rest assured, if you have an emergency or need help there is a team specially trained to assist tourists.
The risk of malaria is continually decreasing across urban areas in Tanzania. However, many tourists choose to come prepared with anti-malarial medications. Even if you accidentally forgot to fill your prescription before traveling, no worries! Many pharmacies here will accept and fill your prescription.
For other prescribed medication, we recommend bringing enough to cover the duration of your trip. All Altezza safari cars are outfitted with a full first-aid kit. Pain relief tablets for minor issues such as headaches are readily available in large towns like Moshi and Arusha.
Technology and communication are vital in our modern world. It is encouraged that you purchase a local SIM card for your own ease of communication. These universal cards are sure to fit almost any phone, but please note you should have your personal phone unlocked or buy an inexpensive travel phone.
The best providers are Airtel and Vodacom, their offices are easy to find and well-known. SIM cards and two week’s worth of phone minutes are very affordable (less than $15 USD total). You should be ready to provide fingerprints and your identification to set up a SIM card.
Half of Tanzania’s population are children: Tanzania loves children! Your beautiful kids are most welcome on safari.
Many accommodations consider children’s needs and provide swimming pools, playrooms or toys for visiting children to utilize. Please mention in advance if you need a baby bed or chair for meals so that they can best accommodate you.
Diapers and wipes are also readily available in towns, but less easy to find in villages or near the national parks, so make sure to buy enough supplies for your safari.
Many lodges and hotels will accept US dollars or Euros. Souvenir markets or other shops may request Tanzanian Shillings only. You can exchange money at banks, and their exchange rates are posted for your convenience. We do not recommend exchanging money anywhere except at a bank.
Do not exchange with an individual, as it is difficult to determine if the money is authentic or counterfeit.
Alternatively, most ATMs accept foreign cards and will provide Shillings, with an attached fee. It is recommended to notify your bank of your upcoming travels so that your card is not blocked, and confirm any foreign ATM fees. PINs should be 4 digits long to work in Tanzanian ATMs.
Finally, more and more businesses in Tanzania are accepting credit cards. Purchases such as genuine Tanzanite gemstones, dining at upscale restaurants and or shopping at large supermarkets might be easily handled with a credit card. Always inform your credit card company of your planned travels and ask about foreign transaction fees.Tanzania Safari Cost

Accommodation in Tanzania

Food and Drink
Tanzanian food is a fusion of tropical flavors and spices, such as rice cooked with cinnamon or fish poached in coconut milk. In Arusha and Moshi towns there are a wealth restaurants and cafes to visit for a meal or just a light snack. These quality establishments offer dishes with a Tanzanian spin on international favorites, such as pizza with fresh pineapple, or traditional meals like roasted chicken and rice, or banana stew.
A safari in Tanzania is sure to be enhanced by experiencing different foods and interacting with local Tanzanians in their everyday life. Many restaurants feature local artists’ paintings and some have evenings with live music, for another layer of Tanzanian culture.
Lunches while on a game drive are usually packed lunch boxes - but don’t get the idea that just because the mid-day meal is to-go that it is somehow lacking. These boxes are often full of homemade items, including fresh bread, delicious fried chicken, fresh fruits and a sweet treat. With vegetarian options and dietary considerations, these boxes are sure to please all palates and be more than enough food to satisfy even the hungriest in a group.
Vaccinations
The current regulations in Tanzania mandate that all visitors to Tanzania should present a certificate of vaccination for Yellow Fever if entering from a country with risk. The full list of Yellow-Fever Risk countries is available on the WHO website.
We recommend consulting with your doctor before traveling to Tanzania, in case your doctor has further recommendations for travel vaccines.
