The First Base Jump from Mount Kilimanjaro

On February 9, 2015 Valery Rozov, a world-famous BASE jumper from Russia, was the first to have jumped from the highest point of Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro.

The expedition was organized by Red Bull in cooperation with Altezza Travel. The ascent started early in the morning on 4 February 2015, on the Umbwe route.  This route begins from the south-east slope of Mount Kilimanjaro and goes through all climate zones, from rainforests to glacial fields.

A successful base jump requires not only experience and skills, but also favorable weather conditions. We chose February because it is  one of the warmest months in Tanzania.

Valery Rozov:
«While looking for the best place for a jump, the biggest problem was that Western Wall was not absolutely vertical. We have lost an entire day finding the most appropriate starting point. We were not able to find it during the first day, and spent a night inside the crater on 5750-meter altitude. The next day the wind and cloudiness were very intense. We could make a jump only on the third of our stay at the top»

During his jump, Valery spent more than 1 minute in free fall state, flying approximately 3 km. The difference in altitudes between starting and landing points was approximately  about 1.5 km.
