Machame Route Review
The Machame Route is the second most popular route to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. This historical route is one of the oldest routes for climbing Kilimanjaro, and is the first tent camping route (in contrast with Marangu, where climbers stay in stationary huts).
The allure of the Machame Route includes an initial climb through a tropical rainforest, close proximity to Moshi for a shorter drive, and the excellent acclimatization on a 7-day trek.
While the first day is sometimes challenging for hikers, successive days are less taxing. Campsites throughout the route are stationed in accordance with the climbing mantra: “walk high, sleep low” for optimal acclimatization to altitude. This is one of the reasons for the high success rate of Machame’s 7-day itineraries.
There are two available options for Machame, 6-day or 7-day treks, we do not recommend the 6-day trek unless you are an experienced climber and have prior acclimatization before attempting Kilimanjaro. The 6-day option has rapid altitude gain, resulting in a lower success rate.
On the other hand, the 7-day trek has excellent acclimatization and overnight camps are at appropriate elevations to encourage adaptation with altitude. While the first day may be difficult, the following days gradually lead to the summit.
One of the reasons this route is the most popular Kilimanjaro climb is because of its high success rate on the 7-day trek.
Climbers will scale Barranco Wall as they trek the Machame Route. This iconic wall can appear intimidating, and while it does at times require the use of hands for “scrambling”, it does not require any technical knowledge. The challenge of ascending 257 meters during the climb is great preparation for summiting Uhuru Peak.
Because of its popularity, Machame can be crowded with many groups. To ensure clients have a comfortable experience our groups usually start earlier and hit the Machame trail before most of the other groups. If you have any additional questions, then this article will be useful to you.
Machame: Pros and Cons
Some things to remembers while choosing Machame route
- Great acclimatization profile
- Incredibly scenic
- Diverse terrain
- Goes through the rainforest on the first day
- High success rate
- Inaccessible during the rainy season
- May be crowded in August-September and January-February
- First day may be tough for inexperienced hikers
Whiskey Route
The two oldest climbs on Kilimanjaro are Marangu and Machame. They are also among the most popular of the budget-friendly options.
Marangu has been nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” due to it being considered the easiest Kilimanjaro route up Mount Kilimanjaro (“easy” being a very loose term when discussing climbing one of the Seven Summits! and, truth be told, it's not the easiest) and because climbers stay in sleeping huts instead of tents.
Machame, on the other hand, is the “Whiskey” to Marangu’s “Coke”. While it is also one of the more budget-friendly climbs, the Whiskey Route is both a more difficult (its six-day variation) and more scenic climb.
Surprisingly, while the progressive days have steeper and more up-and-down hikes on Machame, for the final summit, the 7-day Machame option has a higher success rate than it’s “Coca-Cola” brother. The smaller daily challenges, and well-stationed camping allows for optimal acclimatization.
If you’re going to complete a 7-day trek up Kilimanjaro, the Whiskey Route has a higher success rate than Marangu, and is often considered to be a more beautiful climb.
Machame Route Map for Kilimanjaro Trekking
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via Machame Route allows hikers to experience a variety of climates as they approach the summit and the Machame Route especially highlights the diversity of environments. The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a hike through a tropical rainforest and then on to highlands, eventually reaching the glacier peak at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Trekking through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest-base also gives hikers the chance to spot some Tanzanian wildlife.
After Shira Camp the Machame trek turns west, reaching to Barranco Camp on the third day. It is here that the Machame route converges with the Lemosho Route, and the campsites can become more crowded.
On day four, climbers depart Barranco Camp and ‘scramble’ over Barranco Wall. It looks particularly imposing, but the climb usually takes 1-2 hours, depending on fitness level. For the 7-day trek, hikers move on to Karanga camp, with a short acclimatization hike later in the day. On a 6-day itinerary, climbers continue straight through to Barafu Summit camp and try to get some sleep, as they will be starting for Uhuru Peak at midnight. This is one of the reasons the 6-day trek is more challenging: in a single day a climber will increase altitude from 3,960 m to 4,640 m across 11 kilometers. The 7-day option breaks this challenge into two parts, allowing more time to acclimatize to the altitude and trek a shorter distance over two days.
On the final day, trekkers pass through Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak for an epic sunrise on the Roof of Africa and then descend via Mweka Route on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

What is the accommodation on the Machame Route?
The Machame route has strategically placed campsites throughout, ideal for adapting to higher altitude. Trekkers will sleep in tents at each campsite. Our four-season tents are made for all weather, including rain and snow. Tents will be carried ahead by porters and everything for the camp will be set up before your arrival.
There are several types of tents used on Machame route:
Living tents
For your sleeping pleasure. Two options are commonly available - standard mountaineering tents (like the North Face VE-25 or Mountain Hardwear), and spacious walk-in “space-stations” for those wanting to add a bit of comfort. The larger tents have enough room to use camp cots for an even better sleep.
Each tent sleeps two hikers, though it is always possible to pay for a single supplement and occupy a tent on your own.
Hikers may ask why a single supplement is charged for such accommodation in tents. Typically, packages are sold for double, even triple accommodation in tents, with the calculated costs going toward wages, meals for porters and services. Sleeping single means an extra porter; an extra tent means extra trip expenses all-around.
Mess or dining tents
Meals are served in these large tents. For small groups (12 individuals or less), outfitters typically use ‘space-station’ type tents. Larger parties may use rectangular tents for their dining areas. Both living and dining tents are made of high-quality, sturdy fabric to minimize the impacts of rain and wind and make the experience comfortable.
Machame Route Altitude Profile
While the 6-day and 7-day routes may appear similar on a map, they are in fact very different when it comes to actually trekking. The 7-day Machame route offers one of the best acclimatization transitions of all Kilimanjaro climbs. The fourth day and fifth day treks being broken up across two days allows for better acclimatization and is not a taxing day immediately before ascending Uhuru Peak. Thus, the 7-day Machame route has one of the highest success rates. On the other hand, the 6-day route is not recommended because it does not allow for optimal acclimatization. The fourth day is especially gruelling and has a rapid ascent, causing some hikers to turn back or not be physically prepared to summit on the final day.
Keep in mind, the summit attempt begins at midnight, hence, the amount of trekking the previous day has a major impact one’s physical state. While previous days have morning starts, the final push to the Roof of Africa requires climbers to start in the dark and trek until sunrise. If the day before the summit was a hard challenge, it will make reaching Uhuru Peak that much more difficult.
What is the Machame Route Success Rate?
Compared to the other most popular route - Marangu - success rate on Machame Route is high, especially on the 7-day variation. It is suitable for experienced mountaineers and novices alike.
A six-day Machame trek is the most physically taxing of all 6-day itineraries on Kilimanjaro, and its success rate is lower. We recommend it to the experienced climbers, who have prior high-altitude acclimatization.
Our Machame success rate is:
- On 7-day program - 87.42%
- On 6-day program - 73%
How long does it take to hike the Machame Route?
The Machame Route takes 6 or 7 days, however we strongly recommend the 7-day trek due to its high success rate. A six-day option is a sharp climb, which is recommended to the experienced climbers only, who have acclimated to other mountains prior to Kilimanjaro.
Machame route: 6 days or 7? What to choose?
The Machame route on Kilimanjaro is available in 6 and 7-day trek variations. While choosing between the two you should take into account the following:
SIX-DAY MACHAME
Six-day Machame is the most challenging of all six-day treks on Kilimanjaro. The reason is simple: on the fourth day of the hike the trekkers will be hiking from Barranco camp straight to Barafu summit camp, and then, after about five to seven hours of rest, to Uhuru Peak and down to Millenium camp. This part of the trek takes up about 25 km and it is very challenging. We recommend it to experienced hikers with prior acclimatization.
SEVEN-DAY MACHAME
The 7-day option is a fantastic climb that allows for proper acclimatization. In this Machame variation a trek from Barranco to Barafu is split with an overnight at Karanga camp, allowing the climbers to have sufficient rest and fully recover before the summit attempt.
Kilimanjaro Climbing Tours via Machame route
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will meet an Altezza Travel representative, and transfer to the hotel under the rate. The hotel will provide all the essentials for a comfortable stay: cozy rooms, hot water, polite staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening there will be a briefing with our managers, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb.
PLEASE NOTE:Check-in starts at 2:00 PM.
A guide and a mountain support crew will arrive at the hotel in the morning in order to meet you and hold a quick briefing, after which you will travel by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park's entrance: Machame Gate. After the quick formality of acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will start trekking up to Machame Camp. The trekking route passes through the rainforest where tropical showers are highly probable, so we recommend you take not only spare clothes but also a raincoat.
PLEASE NOTE:This will be your first day at this altitude, so it is strongly recommended you heed the following instructions from this point on:
- Abstain from consuming alcohol and caffeine;
- Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (little by little, frequently);
- Take a Diamox pill to help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Most mountain climbers take Diamox in the morning, before they start their ascent, in order to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. We recommend you consult your doctor prior to the trip to discuss potential allergies.
At night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your breathing pattern at night, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and experience a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.
After breakfast, you will start trekking up to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp. On this day you will emerge from the rainforest and for the first time be able to see stunning views of the Shira Plateau laid out in front of you. Technically speaking, trekking is not very difficult, but you may feel the changes in altitude, so pay attention to your body and remember that choosing the proper pace is extremely important for good trekking. When you reach the camp, you will have lunch and some rest, after which the group will go on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp with a 400-meter (1312-foot) gain in altitude. Back down at Shira Camp, you will be served a hot dinner.
PLEASE NOTE:The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done in order to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.
After breakfast, you will leave Shira Camp and start your way to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,600m/15092f). This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end in a camp at over 4,600 meters (15092 feet). Portions of the trek may be difficult, and it is common to experience some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least 1–2 hours here. For this reason, our groups enjoy lunch at the top of Lava Tower.
After lunch, you will descend to Barranco Camp. Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! Next day you will be climbing it, but don't worry: it features a very simple hiking trail is not intimidating at all.
Your group will have an early start this morning, after enjoying a filling breakfast you will begin climbing Barranco Wall. Wwe recommend you leave the camp as early as possible to avoid crowds of the other groups, which can slow you down. Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. After the climb you can have a rest and take photos in front of the Kibo volcano.
Then you start a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp, which features numerous ascents and descents during the route, but don't worry: our guides are experts at choosing an optimal pace for the group. After reaching the camp you will be offered warm lunch. After a couple of hours you will have to ascend to Barafu Camp where you will be served a hot dinner. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before the night summit.
Your team will depart from Barafu Camp at night and begin the final summit to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19340f). Technically speaking, the climb is relatively simple; however, the most challenging part is the high altitude, which makes even regular physical activity feel strenuous. Each pair of climbers will be under the care of a personal guide for the entire ascent to monitor their physical and mental condition. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier, if desired. Then you will return to Barafu Camp and enjoy a 2-hour rest before continuing your descent to Millennium Camp.
PLEASE NOTE:Don't forget that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including most broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
5,895 m to 3,820 m
Millennium Camp is situated in a tropical rainforest. When you wake up, you will feel relief from the reduction of altitude and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you will head for the park's exit: Mweka Gate. After your descent, the whole group will gather to congratulate you, followed by offering you a chance to share your opinions on the climb in the guestbook. Lastly, we will present you with your commemorative certificates in our office and provide you with a transfer back to your hotel.
Rest in the hotel and transfer to the airport.
PLEASE NOTE:Hotel check-out is at 11:00 AM. In case you need a late check-out because of an evening flight, there is the option to extend your hotel stay for an extra fee.

After breakfast, your group will depart Shira Camp and head towards Lava Tower. The rise-and-fall nature of this trek may present some difficulties. However, reaching the 4,600m/15092f altitude at the Lava Tower is crucial for proper acclimatization, which is why we encourage our groups to eat lunch at the top of the Lava Tower. This allows you some additional time at a high altitude before descending approximately 700m/2297f to Barranco Camp, which is the next overnight stop on this route.
Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! The next day you will be hiking it, but don't worry: it features a very simple hiking trail and is not intimidating at all.
4,630 m to 3,960 m
On this day it is best to make an early start to avoid crowding on the way up Barranco Wall. Despite the Wall's seemingly daunting height and steepness the actual climb is rather simple and takes only an hour or so to complete. The top of the wall provides a great photo opportunity with Kibo Peak as the backdrop.
The next part of the day is rife with ups and downs and your guides will choose the best pace for individual trekkers. A lunch break at Karanga Camp will be followed by an acclimatization hike in the direction of Barafu Camp with its highest point of the hike being 4,270m/14009f. The group then hikes back to Karanga Camp for the night.
After breakfast, you will begin your way to Barafu Summit Camp. Our team will set up a camp for you ahead of time, including tents and sleeping bags, so you can relax upon arrival. After regaining strength, you have to complete an acclimatization climb towards the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp with its highest point being 4,800m/15748f and then back to Barafu Camp, where you will be served a hot dinner. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before the night summit.
Summiting starts around midnight. You will begin at an altitude of 4,673m/15331f and climb to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m/19340f. While the trek itself is fairly simple, the high altitude means that even regular physical exercise will feel strenuous. Therefore, climbers will be put in groups of two and assigned a personal guide who will monitor their condition throughout the climb for the entire summit trek. Upon summiting, you will have an opportunity to walk to the nearest glacier. You will enjoy a 2-hour rest at Barafu Camp and then continue descending to Millennium Camp.
PLEASE NOTE:The descent is deceptively easy and some areas have poor footing. 90% of accidents occur during the descent. Mind your feet if you want to avoid falling and damaged toenails!
5,895 m to 3,820 m
You are sure to enjoy a good night's sleep at the lower altitude, and the sense of satisfaction from reaching the top. Breakfast will be followed by another descent, down to 1,640m/5380f and arrival at Mweka Gate. After a short celebration with the whole of the climbing crew, you will receive your climb certificates and be transported back to your hotel.
Rest in the hotel and transfer to the airport.
PLEASE NOTE:Hotel check-out is at 11:00 AM. In case you need a late check-out because of an evening flight, there is the option to extend your hotel stay for an extra fee.

We recommend Rongai to all those who like reclusive hiking experiences. Getting to the trailhead - Nalemuru Gate - usually takes 3-4 hours from Brubru Lodge or Aishi Machame Hotel. Rongai is also the only route that passes by Mawenzi, one of the three volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro and the third highest peak in Africa. The way back lies through Marangu, and thus you will be able to see both sides of the mountain. Though six and seven-day programs are available for the Kilimanjaro Rongai route itinerary, the longer option is recommended for better acclimatization transition. |

8-day climbing Lemosho route 10 days + 2 days in a hotelFeaturing captivating scenic vistas, pristine wildlife, excellent acclimatization opportunities and low traffic of climbers, Lemosho is one of the best kilimanjaro routes. Besides it is our personal favorite one for reaching the roof of Africa. That's where you'll embark on your adventure through all climate zones - from alpine meadows to eternal ice. The climb is smooth and gradual. Lemosho route success rate is the highest among all of the routes on Kilimanjaro. Six, seven and eight-day programs are available, so you can choose depending on the amount of time at your disposal. Longer programs are always recommended over the shorter ones for better acclimatization. 6 and 7-day Lemosho programs start from a high-altitude drop-off: you’ll be transferred to the elevation of 3,500 m/ 11,500 f by an off-road vehicle and start the hike from there. This is meant to maximize acclimatization transition - the higher you start, the easier your adaptation will be. |

Machame Route Gallery
Frequently Asked Questions
Machame, (pronounced: mah-chah-mae) are a clan of the Chagga tribe, who have resided along Mount Kilimanjaro for centuries. Whether the tribe was named for the Machame area, or the area was named for the tribe, is uncertain. Visitors to Tanzania should keep in mind “Machame” can mean the people group, or the location, or the climbing route. As the conversation goes, it usually becomes clear exactly which “Machame” is being discussed.
Due to its popularity this route can become busy, especially during the high seasons between August and September and January and February. Our groups usually have a bit of an earlier start in order to avoid the crowds, but at the last few campsites there may be an unavoidable ‘tent city’ where all the groups set up their tents.
These two treks converge at Barranco Camp and follow the same trail up to Uhuru Peak. It is the first few days of the trek which differ: Lemosho being considered a premium route with less traffic. Machame typically is crowded, especially during high season. Both routes have excellent acclimatization. For Machame we recommend the 7-day trek, but Lemosho Route has options for 7 or 8-day options, for adventurers who want more time on the Mountain, or want an extra day for even higher chance of success.
These are the two most popular routes on Kilimanjaro. Marangu is available only in short 5 or 6-day options, and is actually more crowded than Machame. Obviously, the extra days and gradual ascent with Machame Route result in better acclimatization.
Another difference with Marangu Route is that overnights are spent in huts, sleeping arrangements designated by park rangers, not tour groups. Some huts are designed to sleep up to 10 people, which can be uncomfortable and crowded quarters. Accomodation on Machame are in special, private, four-season tents and climbers do not share sleeping quarters with other groups. During the rainy season some clients prefer Marangu route because of the convenience of the huts.
Rongai is the only route which approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north. Unlike the Machame route, it is one of the least popular routes because of its remote location.
Though success rate on the Rongai route is more or less satisfactory (about 75% on 7-day trek), Rongai is much flatter than the Machame route, hence the opportunities for “walk high, sleep low” are limited.
Rongai is recommended for those willing to see the much-less travelled northern face of Mount Kilimanjaro and who want to avoid the crowds of Machame Route.
7-day Machame route, however, will be much better for beginning trekkers because of the strategic “sleep low, walk high” opportunities.
The best time to hike the Machame route is in August-September and January-February, when the rains are minimal. However, this is also the high season when the route is the most crowded. June and July are also good times to climb, because there is less traffic and the weather is generally good, however it might be a bit colder and have some precipitation in the mornings.
The Machame Route is 37 miles/62 km.
Conclusion - Why choose Machame Route to Hike Kilimanjaro?
The Machame Route is one of the more preferred climbs to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. The 7-day trek offers excellent acclimatization, fantastic scenery and an adventurous transition through a tropical rainforest and alpine desert before reaching the summit. The 6-day program does not offer good acclimatization and should only be attempted with prior altitude preparation.
For trekkers who want to meet new friends and climb with company, Machame route is usually busy and offers the chance to interact with other climbers. It is also less expensive than Lemosho and has well-positioned campsites.
Reviews
Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes
There are six routes leading to the peak of Kilimanjaro. Each route has something special to offer. Some are known for great acclimatization, others for epic panoramic landscapes. Two of them - Lemosho and Machame - are our favorites. They combine great acclimatization transition and high scenic value. Though Machame is sometimes crowded, Lemosho is always a great choice. You should not, however, think that the other routes are bad. Despite the fact that acclimatization on other routes may be more challenging, the hiking experiences are nevertheless unique.
