We run 15% of all Kilimanjaro expedition
We are certain that you won’t find a more experienced team on Mount Kilimanjaro. For quite a while we have been guiding more expeditions up Kilimanjaro every month and every year than any other operator in Tanzania. Currently, we operate 15% of all Kilimanjaro treks, and we estimate that this share will rise up to 25% in the coming years.
Our own hotels
Altezza runs two hotels in Kilimanjaro region - Altezza Lodge and Aishi Machame Hotel. Our guests are always welcome to enjoy the relaxed tropical ambience of these accommodations before and after their expedition. Both hotels have a swimming pool, WiFi, restaurant and authentic African atmosphere in beautiful surroundings. Altezza Travel’s office and climbing base is permanently located on the territory of Where is Aishi Machame located? Aishi Machame Hotel is located in a picturesque green area, a 20-min drive away from Moshi Town, the capital of Kilimanjaro region and a popular tourist hub. Aishi Machame is home to monkeys, mongooses and other wildlife that you can watch from the terrace in the morning and evening hours. The hotel has everything a traveller may need before and after a Kilimanjaro climb: cosy rooms, nice restaurant, reliable Wi-Fi, swimming pool and doting staff.
Vaccinated team
We take responsibility for the health and safety of our team and guests. Altezza Travel is the first and so far the only company in Kilimanjaro region to have all managers, mountain and safari guides, porters, drivers, cooks, waiters, gardeners and other team members fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with shots by Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. We also encourage all our guests Is a COVID vaccination a requirement to visit Tanzania? No, vaccination against COVID is not listed as an official requirement. However, as a tour operator, we would like to encourage you to get your vaccination shot before traveling to Tanzania. Altezza Travel cares a lot about the health of our guests and staff members. Our whole staff is fully vaccinated against COVID, and we think that vaccination is part of responsible travel nowadays. Our goal is to keep the epidemiological situation in the country under control and not make tourism a threat to local communities. You can read more about the measures we took to win over the pandemic via this link.before traveling to Tanzania in order to protect themselves, other travelers and local communities.
We are part of KPAP
We are a recognized member of theKilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP).What is the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project? Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project or the KPAP is an independent initiative of the International Mountain Explorers Connection, a US-based organisation promoting responsible trekking culture. KPAP is registered as an NGO in Tanzania, and it is NOT affiliated with any trekking operator. They don’t collect fees from travel companies or from porters. The KPAP certification means that a company pays fair wages, provides daily nutritious meals to the porters and treats them fairly in all respects. To monitor work of its existing members, the KPAP assigns a member of their team to each climb. It helps to ensure that the working conditions for the porters are consistently satisfactory and there is no mistreatment. You can read more about KPAP and check the list of its approved members here. This means that the working conditions we created for our porters and guides have undergone independent evaluation and were judged fair and sufficient. We don’t just say that we value our staff and promote ethical working conditions - we back it up with action and actual accountability. At Altezza Travel, porters, guides and cooks are paid above the officially set standard, provided with career advancement opportunities, and their overall health condition is checked and attended to with regularity. We make sure that our mountain crews have good quality gear and get ample nutritious meals to keep their energy levels up.

Membership in KPAP is perhaps one of the most important indicators to check when choosing a mountain company - it ensures that your money goes to a business that gives their employees proper treatment. Unfortunately, some employers take advantage of Tanzania's high unemployment rates and pay porters just a few dollars a day (or worse - do not pay at all!). No gear from the company, one meagre meal a day and tips from the climbers as payment are these porters’ working conditions. Speaking up or complaining would mean losing a job and compensation, so for many continuing to work like this is the only way to win their bread. It is through independent KPAP evaluation that you can get to the true values of a climbing operator in Tanzania.

Group Expeditions
We offer private and group expeditions. For solo travelers and those traveling in 2s, it’s cheaper to join one of our scheduled group climbs. If you are looking to climb with like-minded travelers from all over the world and also want to spend less, this is the best choice for you. Our open group expeditions depart every few days, so you can always find the dates that will fit your holiday schedule. Most climbers on our expeditions come from countries like the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, but there are many others, and the final composition of a group is always a surprise. As you summit Africa’s highest peak, you get a chance to make new friends and see the world through their eyes. Private expeditions will be ideal for those who want to explore the wild with friends, family or colleagues. For companies of 4 participants and more, it will be an even more cost effective solution than open group climbs. We can schedule your private tour for any dates and through any route of your preference. Besides that, you can freely supplement your trek with any comfort upgrades otherwise unavailable on group climbs, e.g. spacious walk-in tents and camping cots. GPS-tracking online
GPS-tracking online
All our expeditions are equipped with a GPS tracker so that your friends and family can follow the progress of your ascent. You’ll receive a link to the GPS tracker of your group shortly before you head for Kilimanjaro. This way those who worry about you back home can check your location on Kilimanjaro in real time.
Best climbing gear
Best climbing gear
We have a good stock of climbing gear from the world’s top brands: Red Fox, Black Diamond, The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, La Sportiva and more. Our rental shop is regularly resupplied with new gear shipped directly from the USA for all our guests to feel simply spick-and-span on the adventure of their lifetime. Hiring our gear for the time of the expedition is the best solution if Kilimanjaro is your first big summit and you’re not yet sure you want to invest a small fortune in all the required items of the same quality.
Oximeters on every expedition
Even though the majority of participants on our climbs successfully reach the summit without resorting to oxygen systems, every expedition is supplied with oxygen in case clients need help adapting to the altitude. Besides cylinders, masks and regulators included in the tour price, we allow for the possible necessity of oxygen resupply - if needed, emergency porters can deliver new tanks up the mountain to your camp.

Altezza Travel is launching a helicopter search and rescue service
Altezza Travel is launching a helicopter search and rescue service
Kilimanjaro is one of the safest mountains for hiking on Earth. However, in the event of emergency, we will soon need only 40 minutes to deliver those in need of help from Kilimanjaro to the hospital. How? - Altezza Travel is bringing its own helicopter and flight crew ready to conduct emergency evacuations. KCMC Hospital, among the top three in Tanzania, has two designated VIP rooms with personal medical staff for clients of Altezza Travel. In September 2022 we plan to perform the first evacuation flights. Altezza Travel will also do scenic flights over KIlimanjaro glaciers for anyone interested.
Medical checks - twice a day
Before the climb, you will fill out a medical clearance form for the crew to assess your general physical condition. When the expedition begins, you will go through two mandatory health checks performed by our trained guides in the morning and in the evening. Throughout the climb, the guides will keep a medical record for each climber to be able to follow the development of your state. A medical examination is mandatory for both the expedition members and the Altezza climbing crew. Regular health checks can help detect the onset of altitude sickness and prevent its further development. This is one of the reasons why many climbers choose us.

Popular Questions
How to get to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania?

Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Edelveis and Ethiopian Airways regularly fly to Tanzania. If the purpose of your trip to Tanzania is to climb Kilimanjaro or go on a safari, then we recommend purchasing an international flight directly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our hotels are just a 40 minutes drive from the airport.

If, for any reason, you cannot fly to Kilimanjaro Airport internationally, you can fly into Zanzibar (ZNZ) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) and then reach Kilimanjaro by local Tanzanian airlines. Altezza Travel managers can help you purchase tickets for domestic flights.

Do I need vaccinations to travel to Tanzania?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for entering Tanzania. The only case that can sometimes be an exception is vaccination against yellow fever. A certificate of vaccination against yellow fever may be required to enter Tanzania if you are coming after a stay in one of the countries with risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g. Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda). You can find a full list of these countries on the website of the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers. If you just plan to have a short (less than 12 hours) layover between flights in one of them without leaving the airport, the certificate will not be necessary.

Those arriving from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, the USA or the countries of the European Union have no vaccine requirements.

What equipment do you need to climb?

Since the trail to the top passes through five different climatic zones - from the rainforest at the beginning to the glaciers at the summit - you should bring gear for a variety of weather conditions. A complete list of required gear can be found here.

If you do not have the needed clothes, shoes, trekking poles, a sleeping bag or any other items from the list, you can always rent the missing equipment from us upon arrival. We only use quality gear from The North Face, Black Diamond, Red Fox and Mountain Hardwear.

When is the best time to climb?

There is no definite answer to this question, but most climbers prefer to fly to Kilimanjaro during dry seasons - from mid-December to mid-March and from mid-June to late October.

However, there are some perks to climbing during the rainy season. Read more in our article.

How much does an expedition to Kilimanjaro cost?

The cost of participating in a comfortable and safe expedition to Kilimanjaro starts from $2,000. It is impossible to organize an expedition cheaper than this - about half of this amount will only cover the fees paid to Kilimanjaro National Park, and the rest should be spent on food, taxes, wages for mountain crew, transfers to and from the park, oxygen systems maintenance, security measures and other important expeditionary expenses. Read more in our article.

Any rate lower than this should be considered a red flag: an operator offering a climb for less than $2,000 must be either taking great safety risks, not paying their employees a fair wage or evading taxes. This is not only dangerous for the climbers, but also unethical and probably illegal. It is because of these “budget climbs” that porters in Tanzania are still exploited.

What level of training is required to climb Kilimanjaro?

There are routes that require more stamina and routes that are suitable for beginners. In general, it’s best to be in good physical shape and be able to walk at least ten kilometers at a time (approximately 6 miles) over rough terrain. Cardio exercises shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge if you want to climb Kilimanjaro. To prepare yourself for the expedition, do regular hiking, jogging and don’t take the elevator when you can climb the stairs.

Read more on the topic in our article here.

Is it safe?
With due preparation, the right choice of a tour operator and a climbing route suited to your level, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the safest climbs in the world! Almost all accidents on Kilimanjaro - about 10-15 a year per 50,000 climbers - are the fault of the host company. Accidents occur because of inadequate qualifications and guides missing from the climber’s side when mountain sickness progresses to a dangerous stage. Addressing these risks is quite simple - choose a reliable expedition outfitter with a good reputation and double check that your guide conducts regular medical checks throughout the climb. And finally, check the company's KPAP membership.
