Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Edelveis and Ethiopian Airways regularly fly to Tanzania. If the purpose of your trip to Tanzania is to climb Kilimanjaro or go on a safari, then we recommend purchasing an international flight directly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our hotels are just a 40 minutes drive from the airport.
If, for any reason, you cannot fly to Kilimanjaro Airport internationally, you can fly into Zanzibar (ZNZ) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) and then reach Kilimanjaro by local Tanzanian airlines. Altezza Travel managers can help you purchase tickets for domestic flights.
There are no mandatory vaccinations for entering Tanzania. The only case that can sometimes be an exception is vaccination against yellow fever. A certificate of vaccination against yellow fever may be required to enter Tanzania if you are coming after a stay in one of the countries with risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g. Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda). You can find a full list of these countries on the website of the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers. If you just plan to have a short (less than 12 hours) layover between flights in one of them without leaving the airport, the certificate will not be necessary.
Those arriving from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, the USA or the countries of the European Union have no vaccine requirements.
Since the trail to the top passes through five different climatic zones - from the rainforest at the beginning to the glaciers at the summit - you should bring gear for a variety of weather conditions. A complete list of required gear can be found here.
If you do not have the needed clothes, shoes, trekking poles, a sleeping bag or any other items from the list, you can always rent the missing equipment from us upon arrival. We only use quality gear from The North Face, Black Diamond, Red Fox and Mountain Hardwear.
There is no definite answer to this question, but most climbers prefer to fly to Kilimanjaro during dry seasons - from mid-December to mid-March and from mid-June to late October.
However, there are some perks to climbing during the rainy season. Read more in our article.
The cost of participating in a comfortable and safe expedition to Kilimanjaro starts from $2,000. It is impossible to organize an expedition cheaper than this - about half of this amount will only cover the fees paid to Kilimanjaro National Park, and the rest should be spent on food, taxes, wages for mountain crew, transfers to and from the park, oxygen systems maintenance, security measures and other important expeditionary expenses. Read more in our article.
Any rate lower than this should be considered a red flag: an operator offering a climb for less than $2,000 must be either taking great safety risks, not paying their employees a fair wage or evading taxes. This is not only dangerous for the climbers, but also unethical and probably illegal. It is because of these “budget climbs” that porters in Tanzania are still exploited.
There are routes that require more stamina and routes that are suitable for beginners. In general, it’s best to be in good physical shape and be able to walk at least ten kilometers at a time (approximately 6 miles) over rough terrain. Cardio exercises shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge if you want to climb Kilimanjaro. To prepare yourself for the expedition, do regular hiking, jogging and don’t take the elevator when you can climb the stairs.
