Spark of Inspiration
We have made this short film to give you a glimpse of what is awaiting you in the national parks of Tanzania. Take a look and see why National Geographic and Animal Planet come here over and over again to film their documentaries about nature.
Tanzania is rightfully extolled as the finest safari destination in Africa. Expeditions of National Geographic, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet don't cease to produce documentaries about the unique wildlife habitats and beauty of this place. Being the largest country in East Africa, Tanzania has more than 30% of its vast territory classed as national parks, game reserves and conservation areas.

The list of Tanzania’s top nature reserves Altezza Travel can take you to:
Serengeti National Park
World Heritage Site and Tanzania’s most famed and remarkable national park. The endless plains of Serengeti are a stage to watch the dramatic circle of life unfold in front of your own eyes. Check our Safari Travel Guide at the bottom of this page to learn more about the Great Migration in Serengeti.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
World Heritage Site and the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The concentration of wild animals inhabiting Ngorongoro Crater is unparalleled by any other national park on the planet. With its stunning views and landforms, the crater is an exceptional geological landmark that is worth a visit on its own.
Tarangire National Park
The sixth-largest national park in Tanzania, Tarangire will treat explorers to superb wildlife viewings. The Tarangire River crossing the valley of the park is a source of fresh water drawing animals to concentrate in the park in great numbers. Densely growing baobabs and acacia trees will provide an iconic African backdrop for your game-drive in Tarangire!
Lake Manyara National Park
Though small in territory, Lake Manyara boasts an impressive range of habitats. Dense woodlands of the park will serve a nice change of scenery after the savanna dominated landscapes and will treat you to viewings of primates, ungulates and, if you are lucky, tree-climbing lions! Out in the open you will get to enjoy the view of Lake Manyara’s serene waters and various birds flocking to its shores.
Arusha National Park
The strongest appeal of Arusha lies in its unique varied geology. Tropical rainforest covering the slopes of the dormant volcano Meru and the breach in its caldera make for the most exciting walking safari route! Only in Arusha will you get up so close and personal with the multiple colobus monkeys, giraffes, buffalo and antelopes that live here. To top off this fairytail experience, you’ll head for the Momella Lakes to watch the migrating water birds that are regular visitors here.
Lake Natron Area
A remote and not so easily accessible landmark, Lake Natron is an especially good idea in August-October when its shores are populated by nesting pink flamingos. During the dry season Lake Natron gains its famous rich red colour. Backdropped by the dramatic sight of the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai towering in the distance, Lake Natron is a truly majestic place to be.
Mahale Mountains National Park
Deep in the heart of Tanzania by the white sandy shores of Lake Tanganyika, you will find one of the world’s most exclusive sites to watch a complex social species of chimpanzees. Guided treks through the jungle forests of the Mahale Mountains will take your breath away with the meaningful insights into the habits and games of the most intellectual apes on Earth!
Ruaha National Park
Far away from Tanzania’s popular national parks, Ruaha is not spoiled by tourists’ attention. This is one of the few corners in the world where you can feel truly one-on-one with nature. The diversity and number of animals you will find here is simply staggering — in line with the magnitude of the park’s size. If you are seeking an off-the-beaten-path safari experience, Ruaha is the place to go!

Popular Questions
How to get to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania?

Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Edelveis and Ethiopian Airways regularly fly to Tanzania. If the purpose of your trip to Tanzania is to climb Kilimanjaro or go on a safari, then we recommend purchasing an international flight directly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our hotels are just a 40 minutes drive from the airport.

If, for any reason, you cannot fly to Kilimanjaro Airport internationally, you can fly into Zanzibar (ZNZ) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) and then reach Kilimanjaro by local Tanzanian airlines. Altezza Travel managers can help you purchase tickets for domestic flights.

Do I need vaccinations to travel to Tanzania?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for entering Tanzania. The only case that can sometimes be an exception is vaccination against yellow fever. A certificate of vaccination against yellow fever may be required to enter Tanzania if you are coming after a stay in one of the countries with risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g. Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda). You can find a full list of these countries on the website of the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers. If you just plan to have a short (less than 12 hours) layover between flights in one of them without leaving the airport, the certificate will not be necessary.

Those arriving from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, the USA or the countries of the European Union have no vaccine requirements.

What equipment do you need to climb?

Since the trail to the top passes through five different climatic zones - from the rainforest at the beginning to the glaciers at the summit - you should bring gear for a variety of weather conditions. A complete list of required gear can be found here.

If you do not have the needed clothes, shoes, trekking poles, a sleeping bag or any other items from the list, you can always rent the missing equipment from us upon arrival. We only use quality gear from The North Face, Black Diamond, Red Fox and Mountain Hardwear.

When is the best time to climb?

There is no definite answer to this question, but most climbers prefer to fly to Kilimanjaro during dry seasons - from mid-December to mid-March and from mid-June to late October.

However, there are some perks to climbing during the rainy season. Read more in our article.

How much does an expedition to Kilimanjaro cost?

The cost of participating in a comfortable and safe expedition to Kilimanjaro starts from $2,000. It is impossible to organize an expedition cheaper than this - about half of this amount will only cover the fees paid to Kilimanjaro National Park, and the rest should be spent on food, taxes, wages for mountain crew, transfers to and from the park, oxygen systems maintenance, security measures and other important expeditionary expenses. Read more in our article.

Any rate lower than this should be considered a red flag: an operator offering a climb for less than $2,000 must be either taking great safety risks, not paying their employees a fair wage or evading taxes. This is not only dangerous for the climbers, but also unethical and probably illegal. It is because of these “budget climbs” that porters in Tanzania are still exploited.

What level of training is required to climb Kilimanjaro?

There are routes that require more stamina and routes that are suitable for beginners. In general, it’s best to be in good physical shape and be able to walk at least ten kilometers at a time (approximately 6 miles) over rough terrain. Cardio exercises shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge if you want to climb Kilimanjaro. To prepare yourself for the expedition, do regular hiking, jogging and don’t take the elevator when you can climb the stairs.

Read more on the topic inour articlehere.

Is it safe?
With due preparation, the right choice of a tour operator and a climbing route suited to your level, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the safest climbs in the world! Almost all accidents on Kilimanjaro - about 10-15 a year per 50,000 climbers - are the fault of the host company. Accidents occur because of inadequate qualifications and guides missing from the climber’s side when mountain sickness progresses to a dangerous stage. Addressing these risks is quite simple - choose a reliable expedition outfitter with a good reputation and double check that your guide conducts regular medical checks throughout the climb. And finally, check the company's KPAP membership.
